Acupuncture? What is it? How can it help Me?

Acupuncture is the stimulation of the specific acupoints along the skin of the body involving various methods such as the application of heat, pressure, and more commonly used penetration of thin needles. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, which aims to treat a range of conditions. According to traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of Qi (means energy) through channels known as meridians.

The precise start date that acupuncture was generally held to have originated in ancient China and how it evolved from early times are uncertain. Traditional Chinese religion attributes the introduction of acupuncture to the god Shennong. Hieroglyphics and pictographs have been found dating from the Shang Dynasty 1600-1100 BCE.

Here are a few ways acupuncture will change your life:

  • Reduce Stress Acupuncture takes the edge off, by mellowing out the nervous system. It can help you feel less affected and better equipped to manage stressful aspects of your life.
  • More Energy Acupuncture can help give you more energy. Many people report having more energy in the hours, days, and even weeks after an acupuncture treatment. You may notice that your not experiencing that after lunch droopy eye and you may be more motivated to hit the gym.
  • Improve Sleep Insomnia is a common complaint seen by acupuncturist, but even people who do not mention or recognize sleep problems, acupuncture has a tendency to produce more restful nights sleep.

Many people turn to traditional acupuncture for help with a specific symptom for condition. Others choose to have treatment to maintain good health. Traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather that specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of health complaints.
